Studies reveal that broken homes are on the rise. Sri Lanka ranked 18th (out of a survey with a sample of 254 countries) for single parent households, according to the United Nations Data Bank. Such dysfunctional atmospheres can adversely affect the children, hindering their development journey. The Department of Census and Statistics has also revealed that 35% of mentally ill persons in Sri Lanka are children between the ages of 5 and 19.
Many other findings and studies further reflect the family unit’s grave issues, led by cultural perceptions and societal norms that influence decision-making and parenting styles. As parents are their children’s primary influence and role models, they must create a safe and cohesive environment at home.
To achieve this, Awake a Nation has initiated training programmes for mothers and fathers across Sri Lanka, creating a national impact.
We intend to equip them with resources and prepare them to mentor their children, instill good values, and, by doing so, encourage their children to reach their fullest potential and be influential citizens in the country.
In fulfilling this mission and empowering people, our team conducted a series of comprehensive trainings and workshops to address this root cause. Our training and development efforts cater primarily to two broad groups: fathers and mothers. These trainings and workshops are typically 20 hour programmes. The initial goal is to create an awareness of the consequences of poor parenting and equip fathers and mothers to gain clarity on their roles as parents. Furthermore, they are facilitated through a process of healing for their own childhood wounds and trauma.
